Jack, Gina, Natalie, and Hannah began the lawn streak test. The media had previously been prepared and the E coli was streaked onto the media. Filter paper disks were soaked in garlic, eucalyptus, tea tree, and oregano oils. The disks were then placed onto the media in separate and labeled petri dishes. A control of distilled water was used.

The group decided to kick off this expo day a little differently. Hannah Auten and Jack Dorland had presented the presentation in front of the team. Not only was it great practice for our presenters, but a chance for them to receive constructive criticism from all the members of the team. Cat Odendahl had shared some of her previous experiences presenting for Sikorsky. Her presentation knowledge was taken into consideration and allowed the team to visualize our goal of captivating the attention of those we will be speaking to. In addition, some new ideas for our presentation were suggested after and new tips were learned. This spontaneous showing has now been agreed on becoming a part of our first five minutes of every expo day (Thursday). It will allow the team to finalize the presentation together as one unit. This way our presenters will feel more comfortable with what they have to pitch and working together will bring us all closer as a team. The team is looking forward to hearing our presenters next week and seeing what changes they have made. Udder Disaster is moving forward in a positive direction and not looking back.
After the presentation, the team started to work on our objectives for the day which were finalizing different parts of the website. Hannah took charge and had enlarged the website on the smart board which allowed the team to view the page together. Rachel Wade has assumed the role of being the team videographer and photographer. Therefore, her work will hopefully be on the website soon. Next, Melanie has decided to update some of the tabs describing mastitis and Kei-Lin Gatling will be working on the purpose portion of the website. Natalie Ferrante was behind the scenes today making sure that everything was organized and all vital parts were being covered by the group. Each member will be working on small portions at home until the next scheduled planning meeting. Written by: Kei-Lin Gatling Due to the inclement weather the team had extra time to work on our presentation. The team split up into three groups: the prevention plan, the experiment and the presenters. Patiann Piazza, Carley Lutheran and Kei-Lin Gatling spent their school day off collaborating. Hannah and Jack assembled a google slides presentation for our field trip at Southern Connecticut State University on 3/16. However, our advisor Mrs. Ebmeyer was just notified that the trip was cancelled. The team was disappointed at first, but now we are looking forward to our future opportunities to present.
This upcoming expo day Natalie Ferrante will be determining if coconut oil will be thick enough to use in our salve and some more website designing will be done! Written by: Kei-Lin Gatling Today in class we worked on our presentation for our field trip to Southern Connecticut State University. We discussed as a group what we thought we needed to present and what we still needed to develop to get our project started. After discussion, we split off into three groups to focus on each specific topic that we identified earlier. Carley, Natalie, and I worked on the procedures and research that we will be using in our project. Hannah and Jack started preparing their presentation for the SCSU field trip. Melanie, Rachel, and Pattiann worked on developing a prevention plan that we will propose in addition to our salve.
In addition, Jack and Natalie made bases for our salve over the weekend and brought them in for us to test out. The bases are made out of beeswax and coconut oil. Because of the viscosity of beeswax and coconut oil, the different ratios of the substances yield different consistencies. As a group we are still trying to decide which ratio is best for our cows, their environment, and the farmer. Tomorrow we hope to present our work to Ms. Ebmeyer, get feedback on it and continue to work on our presentation for SCSU. Also the research team is looking forward to presenting their ideas to the rest of the class about our experiments. Written by: Gina DiFederico Natalie Ferrante and Jack Dorland began the process of experimenting to find the best possible method for making our topical salve. To do this, we had to start with the base. We had to decide what would be the best ratio of coconut oil to beeswax, the components of the base for our salve. We chose to experiment with a 1:2, 1:2.5, and 1:3 ratio of coconut oil and beeswax. The more beeswax we added, the less dense the base would be. By creating these three ratios to test, we could assess which ratio would spread easily on the udder, while at the same time remaining solid enough to stay on.
After gathering the materials, we met at Natalie’s house to make the bases. We melted down the correct amounts of beeswax and coconut oil to create all three ratios, and allowed them to cool. We then brought the samples into class so that the team could decide together which ratio would work the best. Together, we decided that the 1:2 ratio would be the best to work with. We now look forward to working with the essential oils to make the best possible salve for our expo project. Written by Jack Dorland The team is proud to announce that Gina DiFederico and Natalie Ferrante have assumed the roles of team co captains. As co captains they have been monitoring the team's productivity and delegated roles today to each member. Our social media pages, website and logos are currently still being constructed. Gina had sketched a few of her own logos which are under consideration to be used on T-shirts and incorporated into our social media pages. Some of the biographies and pictures have been uploaded to the website. However, the website still is not published for the public to see yet. Our main focus was to go over some of the ways we would like to design the experiment. A collaboration session happened and ideas were shared about what type properties the salve should have. As a result, Cat Odendahl went forth and started to work on the procedure and find more helpful research that can be used in our experiment. Next, there was a discussion on what essential oils and bases will be used in our salve. Jack Dorland presented some relevant information on how the team can incorporate a beeswax and coconut oil ratio within the salve. It was concluded that a set of ratios will have to be tested to find the right consistency that will be efficient in all temperatures and climates that the cows may be in. Since each member now has a designated role they will be working on their individual parts at home tonight and this weekend. More work still has to be completed, but the team is moving forth with a positive attitude on being productive. Written by Kei-Lin Gatling |
